Understanding Personality Disorders
Personality disorders can create enduring thinking, feeling, and behaving patterns that cause significant distress and impairment in daily life. They shape how individuals view themselves, interact with others, and experience the world around them. These disorders affect about 1 in 10 people in the United States.
Types of Personality Disorders
Doctors group these disorders into different clusters based on their symptoms. These clusters help us understand the disorders better. There are three main clusters that all have distinguishing behavior patterns.
- Cluster A
- Cluster B
- Cluster C
Personality Disorder Clusters
Cluster A: Odd or Eccentric Behavior
Cluster A disorders involve unusual thinking and behavior. They include:
- Paranoid personality disorder: People with this disorder often think others are out to get them. They’re always suspicious and don’t trust others easily.
- Schizoid personality disorder: Those with this disorder don’t like being around others. They prefer to be alone and don’t show much emotion.
- Schizotypal personality disorder: This disorder makes people very uncomfortable in social situations. They may have strange beliefs and act in unusual ways.
Cluster B: Dramatic, Erratic, or Emotional Behavior
Cluster B disorders involve over-the-top and unpredictable behavior. These include:
- Borderline personality disorder (BPD): People with BPD have a hard time managing their emotions. They often act impulsively and fear being left alone.
- Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD): Those with NPD think they’re more important than others. They need a lot of praise and have trouble understanding others’ feelings.
- Antisocial personality disorder: People with this disorder often break rules and don’t care about others’ safety. They can be manipulative and act without thinking.
- Histrionic personality disorder: People with this disorder crave attention. They may act dramatically or inappropriately to get noticed.
Cluster C: Anxious or Fearful Behavior
Cluster C disorders involve a lot of worry and fear. They include:
- Avoidant personality disorder: People with this disorder are terrified of rejection. They often avoid social situations because they feel bad about themselves.
- Dependent personality disorder: Those with this disorder rely too much on others. They have a hard time making decisions independently and need others’ approval.
Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD): People with OCPD need everything to be perfect and in order. They follow strict rules, rituals, and schedules.
